Grocery Store Glycerin Bar Vs Sharps Happy Me All Over Soap Bar

by Peter - Owner on Jan.24, 2010, under Body, Metro Mans Thoughts, Product Reviews, Sharps Barber & Shop Product Reviews

sharps happy me all over soap Grocery Store Glycerin Bar Vs Sharps Happy Me All Over Soap BarI was recently at the grocery store and saw a bar of soap that was glycerin-based for  $0.99. So I decided to give it a try and see how this glycerin-based bar would stack up to sharps happy me all over soap bar. The soap bar was green, clear and was infused with aloe vera. At the price of one dollar and being stocked at the local grocery store, I was not expecting much. But I figured that I would give it a try and see how it worked.

Upon opening the bar from its packaging I gave it a quick sniff to see how it smelled. While the scent was not entirely unpleasant, it was not the type of scent that I would like myself to smell like when meeting and being around other people. So upon waking up in the morning I hopped in the shower and began to lather up with this glycerin based bar. I found it extremely difficult to get a good lather going with this bar. It seemed I kept rubbing and rubbing it on but never got any suds. I actually had to rub the bar over the same area three or four times in order to get any type of lather at all. I really had to vigorously rub my entire body to get the proper amount of suds in order to feel clean.

Upon rinsing the soap from my skin,  I really didn’t feel clean. I felt as if this bar was designed with strictly moisture in mind. The makers of this bar really did not add enough cleansers to this product. I have found that many low-end products tend to focus on one aspect of what their product is trying to accomplish without really looking at the big picture. This is exactly what happened with this particular glycerin based soap bar. While the aloe in the product did make my skin feel pretty soft, it just didn’t clean my skin to where I felt clean and ready for the day.

When I compared this product to sharps happy me all over soap it was clear that the sharps bar was designed with the whole picture in mind. The sharps all over soap bar leaves my skin softer than the store-bought brand, while leaving my skin feeling really clean and refreshed.  The scent of the sharps happy me all over soap bar is second to none. It has a nice clean masculine scent that I am proud to wear on my skin as I face my day.

On that note, Sharps Barber and Shop have recently reformulated the happy me so bar with even more moisturizers and gentle cleansers. The new formula of the happy me all over so bar is due to be released this week. We at the Metro man received a bar in the mail for testing and to let sharps know what we thought about it before they released it. We are really excited about this new bar and give it two thumbs up. We will be ordering a lot of these bars to keep in stock as we know everyone is going to love them and they’ll be flying off the shelves. Did I mention they dropped the price to $6.50 a bar or $13 for two bars.

Give Sharps Barber and Shop happy me all over so bars a try. We are sure that you will fall in love with this soap and keep coming back for more.

Balla Powder Tingle Formula Review

by Peter - Owner on Jan.18, 2010, under Balla Powder Product Reviews, Product Reviews

Balla Powder Tingle Formula 300x300 Balla Powder Tingle Formula ReviewBalla Powder Tingle Formula is the third addition to the Balla Powder product line. The Tingle formula was designed to give you the same dryness and freshness of the original formula and Fragrance Free Formula, but with a little kick. Just like the other two products in the Balla line, Tingle formula keeps your nether regions high and dry, while keeping them smelling fresh even under the most extenuating circumstances.

I have previously written reviews on both the Original Formula and the Fragrance Free formula and the Tingle formula is up to par in keeping you as dry and fresh as both of the other 2 products in the balla line. A simple application in the morning and your “Boyz” are going to be dry and fresh all day long and into the evening. Living in Orlando Florida sweating is a way of life, but sweating down there doesn’t have to be anymore now that we at themetroman found Balla Powder.

So how does the Tingle Powder differ from the other two products from Balla recently mentioned?  The Tingle formula is marketed as a tingling sensation upon application. I noticed more of a cooling sensation upon application and for about 30 minutes afterwards. It felt almost like a menthol coolness. It really woke me up after my morning shower. I’m not sure if this product is for everyone, but I personally liked the cooling feeling as I walked outside in the Florida heat. It was kind of a reassuring feeling knowing that my “Boyz” were protected from heat and perspiration.

In Conclusion, Balla Powder Tingle Formula provides all of the protection of the Original Formula while providing a little kick to the nether regions. I like all of the products in the Balla Powder line, but I have to say I think the Tingle Formula is my new favorite. It really wakes me up in the morning and reminds me of my manly prowess as I get ready to face another day in the concrete jungle.

Billy Jealousy ILLICIT Pearlized Body Wash Review

by Peter - Owner on Jan.18, 2010, under Billy Jealousy Product Reviews, Product Reviews

illicit body wash1 206x300 Billy Jealousy ILLICIT Pearlized Body Wash ReviewBilly Jealousy ILLICIT Pearlized Body Wash is a body wash based on Billy Jealousy’s Popular ILLICIT Cologne. It was designed to leave your skin clean, refreshed and smelling like a high end men’s cologne. It is infused with ingredients like Hemp seed oil, agave teaquilana and Vitamin E.

So how does Billy Jealousy ILLICIT Body Wash stack up against other body washes I have tried? For starters I will say that this is by far the best smelling body wash out there. It has a very sophisticated scent that is hard to describe. It is subtle yet very noticeable. It has a sweet hint to it, but the sweetness is not over powering in any way. While it is difficult to describe a scent, I will tell you that this stuff smells great and I guarantee everyone around you will feel the same way.

Cleaning wise Billy Jealousy ILLICIT is a very gentle cleaner. It will not dry out your skin or leave you looking ashy. It gets your skin very clean without over cleaning and drying out your skin. This factor is a definite plus for anyone with dry skin such as me. Another thing I like about ILLICIT body wash is that it contains Vitamin E. Vitamin E has been shown to be extremely beneficial to skin in keeping it soft and looking youthful. I can really feel that my skin is very soft after using the Pearlized body wash.

The only downfall to ILLICIT Body wash is that you really need to use a loofa to get it to suds up properly. With a loofa it with create lots of suds, but when trying to create a lather in your hands it seems to take a little while.

In Conclusion, I really like Billy Jealousy’s Illicit Body Wash. It get’s you clean without over drying, Leaves your skin feeling extremely soft and it is the smelling body wash I have ever tried (and I have tried a lot!).

Don’t for Get about the Billy Jealousy ILLICIT eau de parfum, the cologne that ILLICIT Body wash was based on.

Jack Black Lip Balm VS Blistex

by Peter - Owner on Jan.13, 2010, under Body, Jack Black Product Reviews, Metro Man Grooming Guides, Metro Mans Thoughts

Jack Black vs Blistex Jack Black Lip Balm VS BlistexEveryone gets dry chapped lips from time to time, It goes hand in hand with being a human. So the normal thing to do is grab a lip balm and apply it to your lips to help soothe and heal them right? Of course, but what you might not know is that the store brand lip balms contain lots of ingredients that your local chemist might have a hard time pronouncing. Ingredients like Polybutene (Plasticizer), Methylparaben (Found in Hair Gels, Anesthetic and a preservative), and Isopropyl Stearate which is mildly toxic when ingestide. These 3 ingredients are listed right on the side of the Blistex Medicated Lip Balm Box. Would you really still put this stuff on your lips after reading what the ingredients are and what they do?

I used to use Blistex religiously before I actually read the box and did a little research. It wasn’t that great at healing my lips and I had to reapply it constantly. I wasn’t very happy with the product in the first place, but at the time I thought that it was the only game in town for chapped lips. Upon discovering high end mens skin care products I was immediately interested in Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm. I wanted to compare it against Blistex and see how it stacked up against the standard grocery store lip balm. Upon getting my hands on Jack Blacks lip balm, I took a look at the ingredients. I was pleased to see things like Shea Butter, Avacado Oil, and Vitamin E. These were ingredients I could pronounce. I checked with the local chemist and he was able to pronounce every ingredient, A good sign!

So now knowing that the ingredients in the Jack Black lip balm were safe for my lips and weren’t used in the making of Gasoline I was ready to give it a try. I applied it to my lips and the first thing I noticed was the great light scent that it had. Very pleasing and it didn’t taste like the scent which I loathe. The next thing I noticed is that it instantly made my lip feel moisturized and soft. What a great feeling. The next thing I noticed is that after 45 minutes I still didn’t need to reapply. I guess that is what happens when you are using a lip balm that is made with great natural ingredients and not concocted in a laboratory full of industrial chemicals.

In conclusion, Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm Blow Blistex out of the water in every category. First off is safety, Blistex has tons of questionable industrial chemicals, while jack black is mainly made up of natural oils. Second is that Jack Black smells way better all day long, no chemically mint smell here. The third thing and second in importance only to safety is how it works. There is simply no comparison with these 2 products, Jack black Lip Balm si simply a better product for your lips in every aspect. The final thing that sets Jack Black Lip balm way ahead of Blistex is the fact that it stays on your lips 5 or 6 times longer. Which is essence makes it a better value that blistex.

If you have not already tried Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip balm, I suggest that you do yourself and your lips a favor and give it a shot. I guarantee that you will not be disappointed.

I have listed the ingredients and a summary of what the ingredient does for both products below for you to compare them. I am sure after looking at this you will be convinced that Jack Black Lip Balm is the one for you!!!

medicated lip balm Jack Black Lip Balm VS BlistexBlistex Ingredients:

Active Ingredients

Dimethicone – used as emollients (skin softeners), as lubricants, as thickeners, and as volatile liquids that make coatings feel smooth, but evaporate without leaving a greasy residue.

Oxybenzone – used as an ingredient in sunscreen and other cosmetics because it absorbs UVB and short-wave UVA (ultraviolet) rays.[

Padimate –  is an ester organic compound related to the water soluble compound PABA (4-aminobenzoic acid), and used as an ingredient in some sunscreens.

Inactive Ingredients

Beeswax –  is a natural wax produced in the bee hive of honey bees of the genus Apis.

Camphor – Camphor is a white transparent waxy crystalline solid with a strong penetrating pungent aromatic odor. It is found in wood of the camphor laurel, Cinnamonum camphora, which is a large evergreen tree found in Asia (particularly in Borneo, hence its alternate name); it can also be synthetically produced from oil of turpentine.

Cetyl Alcohol –  Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Myristyl Alcohol and Behenyl Alcohol are white, waxy solids. Isostearyl Alcohol is a clear liquid. Cetyl Alcohol and Stearyl Alcohol are the two major components of Cetearyl Alcohol. These ingredients are all fatty alcohols and that are widely used in cosmetics and personal care products, especially in skin lotions and creams.

Cetyl Palmitate – esters of cetyl alcohol and saturated high-molecular-weight fatty acids, principally palmitic acid, used as an emulsifying and stiffening agent.

Euphorbia Cerifera Wax – is a wax derived from the leaves of the small Candelilla shrub native to northern Mexico and the southwestern United States, Euphorbia cerifera and Euphorbia antisyphilitica, from the family Euphorbiaceae. It is yellowish-brown, hard, brittle and opaque to translucent.

Isopropyl Myristate – is used in cosmetic and topical medicinal preparations where good absorption through the skin is desired. It is also used as a pesticide-free treatment against head lice which works by dissolving the wax that covers the exoskeleton of head lice, killing them by dehydration.–

Isopropyl Stearate –  Mildly toxic by ingestion. It’s a skin irritant.

Lanolin –  also called Adeps Lanae, wool wax, wool fat, anhydrous wool fat or wool grease, is a greasy yellow substance secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals, with the vast majority of it used by humans coming from domestic sheep. Chemically akin to wax, it can be used as a skin ointment or water-proofing wax, and is also sometimes used as a raw material in the manufacture of such products as shoe polish.

Methylparaben –  Methylparaben is an anti-fungal agent often used in hair gels. The compound is often found in carpules of local anaesthetic, acting as a bacteriostatic agent and preservative.

Mineral Oil –  Mineral oil or liquid petroleum is a by-product in the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline and other petroleum based products from crude oil.

Ozokerite – is a naturally-occurring odoriferous mineral wax or paraffin found in many localities.

Petrolatum –  A clear to yellowish, semi-solid insoluble emollient. It is an oil derivative, and acts as a lubricant in lipstick. It helps to smooth skin and prevents evaporation of moisture by forming a film on the skin’s surface.

Polybutene – A liquid oligomer, polybutene and polyisobutylene are widely used as a plasticizer for high molecular weight polymers, such as polyethylene.

Propylparaben –  occurs as a natural substance found in many plants and some insects, although it is manufactured synthetically for use in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and foods. It is a preservative typically found in many water-based cosmetics, such as creams, lotions, shampoos and bath products.

Red 6 Lake –  Decorative cosmetic products including lipsticks, lip liners, lip gloss, nail lacquers & face makeups (in USA prohibited for eye makeups), personal care products, soaps.

Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter – Cacao seeds are the source of commercial cocoa, chocolate, and cocoa butter. Fermented seeds are roasted, cracked and ground to give a powdery mass from which fat is expressed. This is the cocoa from which a popular beverage is prepared. In the preparation of chocolate, this mass is mixed with sugar, flavoring, and extra cocoa fat.

Titanium Dioxide – This mineral can be found in many products, ranging from paint to food to cosmetics. In cosmetics, it serves several purposes. It is a white pigment, an opacifier and a sunscreen. Concern has arisen from studies that have pointed to titanium dioxide as a carcinogen and photocatalyst, thus creating fear in consumers.

Jack Black Lip Balm 133x300 Jack Black Lip Balm VS BlistexJack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm Ingredients:

Active Ingredients

Octinoxate –  is an organic compound that is an ingredient in some sunscreens and lip balms.

Avobenzone – is an oil soluble ingredient used in sunscreen products to absorb the full spectrum of UVA rays.

Inactive Ingredients

Shea Butter –  is a slightly yellowish or ivory colored natural fat extracted from the seed of the African shea tree by crushing and boiling. It is widely used in cosmetics as a moisturizer and salve. Shea butter is edible and may be used in food preparation, or sometimes in the chocolate industry as a substitute for cocoa butter.

Avacado Oil – is an edible oil pressed from the fruit of the Persea americana (avocado). It is also used for lubrication and in cosmetics where it is valued for its regenerative and moisturizing properties.

Sweet Almond Oil – is one of the most well-known and commonly used carrier oils. With its light, nongreasy weight and high fatty acid content that can nourish and soothe skin, sweet almond oil is popular as a massage oil and bath additive.

Lemon Peel Oil –  Lemon peel essential oil acts as a natural astringent, antiseptic, and bactericide on the skin

Chamomile Flower Oil – calms red, dry and irritated skin, as well as calming allergies, eczema, psoriasis and all other flaky skin problems. It is high in -(-a)-bisabolol which promotes granulation (healing) and is also a great tissue regenerator.

Green Tea Leaf Extract –  Studies of humans and animals show that the antioxidants in green tea are highly beneficial to our health.

Balla Powder Original Formula Review

by Peter - Owner on Jan.11, 2010, under Balla Powder Product Reviews, Product Reviews

Balla Powder Original Formula 300x300 Balla Powder Original Formula ReviewBefore Contacting Balla Powder and requesting samples to try, I had never tried a product like this before. It seemed like a great idea and considering that I live in Florida which is one of the most hot and humid places around, I thought that it would be a great product to help with sweating in the lower extremities. Balla Powder was designed by men who know the perils of a clammy sack and sweating in the nether regions. They created Balla Powder to be an easy once a day application product that kept your “Boys” dry all day. They created 3 different variations of the product, Original Formula, Tingle Formula and Fragrance Free Formula.

Balla Powder comes in a very discreet looking black bottle and has a built in dispenser that does not allow the powder to pour out and go everywhere. Very helpful in the morning when you are not firing on all cylinders. Balla Powder is very easy to apply, you simply sprinkle a little on your hand and rub the area’s you want to keep dry.  Very easy! You can also use it for your feet, underarms or rear section.

During my first use of the Balla Powder Original Formula I instantly noticed the clean and crisp scent that it had. The scent was not chemically at all; it was a very pleasant smelling product. Upon applying it, my undercarriage felt instantly dry and cool. A quick rub around the “Boys” and I was ready to face the day clean, smelling fresh and dry.

I went about my day as normal, took care of a few Metro Man type things, Went to the gym and worked out really hard for over an hour and not once did I perspire down there. I was really amazed at how absorbent Balla Powder really is. Not a drop of sweat after a rigorous workout.

I truly recommend Balla Powder for anyone who wants to feel fresh and clean all day every day. Great for date night, nights on the town, or any other night where you would want to have your entire package clean and fresh.

The $175 Razor: A Sign of Economic Recovery in Retail?

by Peter - Owner on Jan.06, 2010, under Metro Mans Thoughts

62011 The $175 Razor: A Sign of Economic Recovery in Retail? The place feels like a jewelry store. Wood furnishings give the display that luxury vibe; sterling-silver pieces sit inside glass-enclosed cases. But at the Art of Shaving, a 14-year-old retail outlet that sells high-end grooming products, shoppers aren’t searching for diamonds and pearls. It’s the razors that rule the room.

Want to pay $3,400 for a sterling-silver razor, stand and brush? Believe it or not, there’s actually a store for you. The Art of Shaving has 36 outlets around the country, and is set to expand. While sales took a predictable hit during the worst of the recession, perhaps it’s a positive sign for the economy that the Art of Shaving’s revenues rose 19% during the last quarter of the year. If people will fork over insane amounts of money to properly trim their facial hair – in a New York City store, a razor with a nickel-plated brass handle costs $175 – perhaps national spending will finally loosen. “We’re definitely linked to the economy,” says Eric Malka, co-founder and CEO of the Art of Shaving. “As consumer confidence comes back and the stock market comes back, our consumers have been more willing to purchase our products.” (See the best business deals of 2009.)

In fact, Procter & Gamble, the $79 billion consumer-goods giant, is even taking a bet on the blades. The maker of mass-market products such as Tide detergent, Crest toothpaste and Ivory soap purchased the Art of Shaving in June for an undisclosed sum. P&G’s move surprised some analysts, as it represented the company’s first real foray into retail, which has struggled during the downturn. “You kind of wonder what they are doing here,” says Linda Bolton Weiser, equity research analyst at Caris & Co. “When companies start to veer off their main focus, it often doesn’t work out.”

P&G might have picked the right product to push in stores, however, since it already owns Gillette, the dominant shaving brand. The Art of Shaving gives P&G yet another outlet in which to sell the Gillette blades, and perhaps give its products a more premium cachet. “This is alternative marketing, just another way to promote the Gillette brand,” says William Chappell, an analyst for SunTrust Robinson Humphrey. “P&G has already done everything you can think of with traditional marketing. This isn’t a core push into retail. Now, if you tell me that they are selling Tide and Pampers as well as Gillette, that’s a different story.” (See the worst business deals of 2009.)

Though it may not signify a major strategic shift for P&G, the Art of Shaving is one of the more intriguing chips in company’s portfolio. While neither the store nor P&G will specify how many new outlets will open over the next few years, expect a surge. “P&G acquired this business, and obviously wants to grow it,” says Malka. “P&G has a mission to win with men, and the Art of Shaving is an important platform to serve men in the premium marketplace.”

Malka and his wife, Myriam Zaoui, founded the company in their kitchen while Zaoui was studying to be an aromatherapist. “She blended some oils for me to put under my shaving cream so that the razor glided over the skin and didn’t grab hair,” Malka says. “It worked magic for my skin and was the catalyst for starting the shaving business.” They sold their BMW for $12,000 – “We were broke,” Malka says – and opened up a small Manhattan store in 1996. The company sells its own Art of Shaving–brand products in its stores and other high-end retailers like Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Saks. (See the best pictures of 2009.)

On the surface, it seems outlandish that people would buy five ounces of shaving cream for $22. This stuff is a commodity that just sits on your bathroom shelf, right? But don’t underestimate the importance of a smooth shave. “A lot of our customers suffer from shaving discomfort,” says Malka. “So spending $100 on shaving products becomes very inexpensive once you realize the benefits our products have on your skin.”

The Art of Shaving has corralled enough loyal customers to carve out a niche in the grooming sector. Heck, the company even sold some of those $3,400 sets this holiday season. “We’re confident that the momentum we’ve experienced the last couple of months will continue into 2010,” says Malka. “And now with our partners at P&G, we can take the business to another level.” But in a still shaky economy, can the blade business avoid deep cuts along the way?
